Overview of Brechin

The town of Brechin lies South of Aberdeen Airport a distance of around 48 miles in the region of Angus between Aberdeen and Dundee. The direct route to take would be the A90 via Laurencekirk. It has a population of 7,199 according to the 2001 Census. It lies on the banks of the River Esk, and has a history reaching back to the Picts where it was central to the Pictish Kingdom and many relics have been found and housed in Brechin Castle Visitor Centre.

The Cathedral with eleventh Century round tower is a tourist hotspot that dates back to the 13th Century whose stain glass is listed amongst the best in Scotland. Just under 9 miles away you can venture to the coastal town of Montrose. The town is also know for the Battle of Brechin that took place in 1452 that was is through to have been part of a civil war between King James II of Scotland and noble scottish families of the times. Information on the history of the town can be found at Brechin Museum. Take a walk along the Whiskey Trail that would take you to Glen Esk, with beautiful views of farmland, estates and misty landscapes.

An ever popular tourist attraction is the award winning Caledonian Railway a well preserved victorian railway terminus with steam trains, holding special events all through the year. The town has alot to offer for families, from hotels, shops and places to eat. There is also information on the surrounding area available from the Tourist Information Centre in Brechin.
