Overview of Arbroath

The town of Arbroath in the region of Angus is around 60 miles South of Aberdeen Airport and would take 1 hour and 30 minutes travelling by car down the A90 via Laurencekirk. It is a north sea coastal town on the East Coast of Scotland and close to the neighbouring city of Dundee which is only 16 miles away. The population of Abroath as of 2001 was 22,785 according to the census. With its harbour dating back to the 14th century the town has been a factor in the scottish fishing industry formerly producing flax and jute it would later produce sailcloth that helped in the towns expansion. The fishing industry is still a key feature in terms of employment particularly since a new harbour was built in 1839 but this industry is now accompanied by oil and gas production and food processing.

The largest town in Angus, it is know for its 'Abroath Smokies' smoked haddock over oak chips and kippers. Arbroath has a theatre called the Webster Theatre a popular place for residents and visitors alike. Known also as a holiday resort with its sandy beaches lined with sandstone cliffs and hidden caves. Two unmissable features of the town would be the Bell Rock Lighthouse and the Signal Tower that houses the museum and the Arbroath Abbey in the town centre. The town and surrounding area is rich in bronze age and Iron age archeology and is thought to have been a settlement since the Neolithic period.The Abbey is known for its significance in Scottish History when the Declaration of Independance was signed here in 1320 marking Scotlands liberation from English rule and sees over 14,000 visitors each year.

An ever popular tourist town visitors get to enjoy the annual Seafest held in the summer celebrating the fishing town, with events such as boat races, appearances by the Royal Lifeboat Association and Scottish bagpiping and not to forget the Seafront Spectacular featuring an Airshow. With the countryside surrounding the town there are many places to walk and sample scottish life from walking along the Cliffs of Auchmithie or the town Harbour to walking amongst the Pictish stones at the chursh of St Vigeans. As with other local scottish towns Golf is a popular past time with facilities at Arbroath Golf Course and Artisan Golf Club for public and private use. Other funpacked activites great for family days out can be found in places like Pleasureland indoor fun fair and amusement arcade, Landmark Forest Theme Park and Codonas Amusement Park.

The town comprises of Hotels, Shops, Supermarket, restaurants and cafes to sit and watch the world go by. The town has a railway station offering links to Dundee, Edinburgh, Perth and Glasgow. As a larger town in the area it has a college, Angus College two Secondary Schools and 11 primary schools leaving students tend towards University of Dundee, University of St Andrews, and the University of Aberdeen.
