The town is officially called Charlestown of Aboyne after the 1st Earl of Aboyne and before that it was known as Bonty.
Founded in 1671 by the Earl of Aboyne and having been modelled by one of the first Marquesses of Huntly the town has the appearance of a traditional English village with a green in the centre. Nearby is Aboyne Castle built in the 17th Century and now restored as a private residence and the Loch of Aboyne.
